5 Key Concepts with Theorys

Audience: The target audience that we have chosen for our film is  16-24 year old females. We have chose this as our target audience as we feel that females will be able to relate to the situations that take place within the film.  We have aimed the film purely at females, as the story of it focus's on 3 young girls who all fall for the same boy. We would expect our target audience to be either employed or still education, they will be getting some sort of income from a part or full time job or even university funds, meaning that they will be able to afford to go the cinema to see the film. The target audience of the film will be either couples or single females, as we wouldn’t expect a single male to go and see.

Uses and Gratifications Theory: From watching our film the audience will be able to link to it through personal identity. They will be able to relate to the issues the occur within the plot of the film as they may have experienced similar situations themselves.  In my trailer diversion was used when the character Millie falls over the banana skin infront of Jack, this is funny for the audience as they know they she has just fallen over and embarrased herself in front of him. In my own trailer teenagers are shown as being bitchy and arrogant, this represents what some teenagers now a days are like as they are growing up. The relationship narrative of my storyline between the characters Millie and Jack is a very stereotypical one, Millie (the new girl) falls for Jack (the most popular boy in school). She tells him that she likes him and he doesn't know how to respond so he doesnt which upsets Millie, they dont talk for a few weeks, then Jack goes after Millie at a party to express his feelings for her, however she is with another boy, they fight and it ends up with Millie and Jack leaving together. They go off and talk then, they then fall in love. This is relatble for our target audience as they may have gone through similar experiences themselves.

Media Language: The settings that we have used in our film are, schools corridors, school library, a house(Party scene). Each setting that we have used are stereotypcial locations for teenage angst films. As like most American and British teenage angst films the majority of our footage is shot within the school.

Representation: The characters that we used in our film fit in with the genre of it very well as they are all 17/18 year old students meaning that they are still in education and the issues that come up in the film they might be able to themselves.  In my own film teenagers are represented as being very bitchy and argumentive, this is shown through the female characters in my film such as Millie and Charlotte when they are battling it out throughout the film for Jack's love.

Genre: The genre of our film is teenage angst. Teenage angst films are a mixture of comedy and romance. We chose to use this genre after researching into other teenage angst films such as Mean Girls, She’s the Man and Easy A. When researching these films, we looked at the outfits that the characters were wearing, the settings and locations that were used and also the props that were used. This allowed us to get a clear indication of what we needed to do and include ensuring that our film fitted in with the genre correctly. The most obvious thing that we discovered when researching into teenage angst films is that a lot of the footage in the films are filmed inside or around a school. There is usually a party that takes place in teenage angst films aswell, and this is where something will happen that will have a significant effect on the rest of the film and what is about to happen.

Narrative:
The narrative of our film is about a 17 year old girl called Millie. At the beginning of the film Millie moves to a new school, the school is not what she is used too as she has gone from living in a city to living in a small quiet town. On the first day that she starts her new school Millie notices Jack. Jack is the popular boy around the school who all the girls are after. Millie instantly falls for Jack , however she is too shy and scared to approach him as she knows that all the other girls want him as well. She then meets Charlotte who is the popular girl and the future school prom queen. Charlotte also loves Jack and always tries to get his attention. Millie begins to try and get Jack’s attention as well however she causes trouble when she does as Charlotte notices what she is trying to do, however Millie is successful in trying to get Jack’s attention as he catches her out when she Is staring at him, and they finally speak to each other. After this they are put together for a science assignment which brings them closer as they have to work together, resulting in them spending a lot of time together. A few weeks later Millie decides to tell Jack how she feels about him. Jack is surprised by this as he thought that they were just good friends and he doesn’t know what to say or do. This upsets Millie as she thought that Jack felt the same way, she begins to hide away from him for a few weeks as she feels embarrassed. Jack then realises that he does like Millie back but he thinks that it might be too late as she has gone to a party with a boy called Ben. He runs to the party to tell Millie how he feels, but upon his arrival he finds out that she has gone upstairs with Ben. Angry and upset by this, Jack rushes up the stairs and bursts in and starts arguing with Ben, this turns into a fight. Millie breaks the fight and up leaves with Jack, they leave the house and tell each other how they feel and end up getting together. The characters in our film are represented as stereotypical characters for teenage angst films. Millie is represented as being shy, geeky but also good looking, she is not very popular as she has just moved to the school. There is a popular boy who is good looking, confident, arrogant, thick, sporty jock who knows how popular he is around school. There is a popular girl around the school who is set to be the future prom queen, she is represented as being very Bitchy, good looking, thick and arrogant, however she is also aware of how popular she is around the school. The character Ben is your average teenage boy that is stuck between Millie and Jack.

I have applied the characters in my own film to the theories of Vladimir Propp and Tzvetan Todorov.
Vladimir Propp:
  • The Villain - Charlotte, the popular female character. Tries to prevent Millie from speaking to Jack.
  • The Hero - Jack, as he tries to rebuild the connection between himself and Millie after he realises that he messed up before.
  • The Donor - The character Jack when he goes to look for Millie to tell her how he really feels towards her.
  • The Helper - The character Ben would be known as the 'helper' in my film, he is good friends with Jack all the way through until the very end of the film where the pair fight over Millie.
  • The Princess/Reward - Millie, the new girl within the school.
  • The Despatcher -In my own film there isn't really anyone that sets Millie off to try and get Jack's attention and likewise there isn't really anyone that sets Jack off to try and get Millie Back at the end of the film. If there was to be a despatcher it would be Jack as he goes after Millie when she goes to the party to tell her how he feels.
  • The False Hero - Ben, the boy that Millie goes to the party with. Tries to convince Millie to go out with him rather than Jack.
Tzvetan Todorov:
  • Equilibrium - All of the girls around school love Jack, Charlotte(the popular female) sets her mind on going out with Jack and also going to prom with him.
  • Disruption - A new girl named Millie moves to the school, Millie notices Jack and begins to realise who he is and she falls for him. The pair then get put together in a group to work on a science project.
  • Reaction to the Disruption - Millie tells Jack that she really likes him, Jack doesn't know how to react as he thought that they were just good friends. This leads to Millie ignoring Jack and hiding from him for a few weeks.
  • Attempt to Repair - After finally realising that he does like her back Jack goes to talk to Millie, however she has already gone to a party with Ben. Jack then goes to find Millie to express how he feels towards her. Jack finds Millie with Ben and then a fight breaks out between Jack and Ben. Millie then decides to leave with Jack so that they can talk.
  • New Equilibrium - Jack and Millie express how they feel towards each other and decide to start going out.
